Research shows that some areas of the brain in people with ADHD may be a bit smaller or work differently. This doesn’t affect intelligence, but it can make certain everyday tasks feel harder than they should.

For example, parts of the brain, such as the amygdala, which helps with emotions, and the hippocampus, which supports memory and learning, can work a little differently.

At the same time, the prefrontal cortex, located right behind your forehead, plays an important role. It acts like the brain’s “manager,” helping with planning, staying organized, and controlling impulses.

In both kids and adults with ADHD, this area may develop more slowly or be less active. Because of this, things like focusing, managing time, or following through on tasks can feel more difficult, even when you really want to do them.

It’s also about how different brain regions talk to one another. In an ADHD brain, the "roads" between the brain's center and the frontal lobe might be less direct. This affects how quickly someone can shift their focus from a video game back to a conversation.

For example, sugar and food dyes are often blamed for hyperactivity. While a healthy diet is great for everyone, research shows that sugar doesn’t cause ADHD.


The same goes for screen time. While tablets and phones are very stimulating, they don't create the condition. Instead, people with ADHD are often drawn to screens because the fast-paced input matches their brain's need for constant stimulation.
